Throughout the year, SNA hosts free member confer-
ence calls concerning a variety of topics, evoking the
exchange of the latest ideas and creative brainstorming
among newspaper personnel from across North
America. In last month’s Circulation/ Distribution
Great Ideas Conference Call nearly 60 people dialed in
to openly discuss and share thoughts on single copy
initiatives, rack placement, special promotions,
employee motivation and much more.
Al Cupo, SNA Vice President, Sales and Marketing
coordinated the call and gave all participants the
chance to share ideas. Several presenters expressed
immense excitement regarding their “great ideas”,
many of which have already garnered outstanding
results within their company. Call participants were
later asked to cast their votes for the top three great
ideas via email. After 2 days of voting, top honors went
to Amanda Henry of the Lawrence (KS) Journal World.
Henry’s winning idea involved a special spring-twist to
the normal crewing that many newspapers perform to
get new starts. In their market, Lawrence, KS, they
conducted a “Door-to-Door Plant Giveaway”. The pro-
gram started with a 7-day free sample that included a
note indicating a newspaper rep would be following up
in person with a “special gift.” The newspaper part-
nered with a local nursery who provided starter plants
and the follow up crew offered them as free gifts to
“open doors”. This fueled about 55 full paid starts.
The next SNA conference call is for the Classified
Alliance. The free call will occur on June 7, 2pm
Eastern time. Topic is Re-Create Your Classifieds
with "Creative" Planning featuring guest speaker
Mike Kment, Director of Classified Advertising,
Gannett Co., Inc. All SNA members are invited to sign
up for this call - FREE OF CHARGE - just call or
