Suburban Roundup & Beat
Contests and Conferences
IN THIS ISSUE
of the Year!
The true essence of membership in SNA is com-
munity, both in the newspapers that members pub-
lish and the spirit that drives the camaraderie
amongst all who belong to this progressive and
influential organization. The leading conference of
the year is just around the corner and the biggest
bang you can get for your membership buck is the
rewards of attendance at the Fall Publishers' & Ad
From September 12 to 15, the city of Dallas,
Texas will play host to SNA's leading conference.
Members and special guests will revel in the
excitement of being the first to hear the results of
the largest major research study ever undertaken
on behalf of suburban and community newspa-
pers. Belden Associates will unveil the highly
anticipated findings of the over 8,500 interviews
they conducted in 22 markets between March &
July of this year.
Adding to the excitement of the study results will
be the dozens of major media buyers in attendance
who have eagerly given numerous time slots for
members to meet with them in private, one-on-one
settings. These appointments are fully reserved as
of this writing but SNA is happy to place you on
the wait list. Call Kim Cole at 610-345-0795 if
interested. Many of the media buyers are staying
on for the full conference so there will be addition-
al opportunities to mingle with these VIP's..
Newspaper execs will also have the distinct pleas-
ure of hearing the keynote address from Gary
Kelly, Vice Chairman & CEO of Southwest
Airlines. Mr. Kelly will discuss how his small,
"hometown" airline catapulted to success by
embracing change; how the now-large company
stays true to its hometown roots by thinking
small; and how Southwest Airlines competes (and
will continue to compete) with the "major metro"
airlines, much like the SNA's member papers
compete with their industry's own major metros.
The parallels to the newspaper industry are amaz-
ing and there are many lessons to be learned.
The site of all conference meetings is The
Adolphus hotel. The block of rooms held for SNA
at The Adolphus is now fully reserved but addi-
tional rooms are still available at the hotel across
the street, the Magnolia Hotel, for $169 per night
(the same price as The Adolphus). Reservations
can be made by calling 1-888-915-1110 and refer-
encing the SNA room block.
Don't miss the largest and most valued general
conference of the year. The full conference
brochure and registration forms are available at
SNA's website, www.suburban-news.org. Act
quickly --the deadline to receive the early bird dis-
count for conference registration is August 14.
Of course, SNA staff stands ready to help get you
to Dallas and can be reached at 888-486-2466.
